Wax Melt Basics

What is a wax melt?

Wax melts were first created as a way to use up excess wax left over by candle makers.

Candles orignated around 5,000 years ago, but wax melts are a relatively new concept in comparison - having increased in popularity in recent years.

Essentially, a wax melt is a wickless candle. Wax melts can come in a wide range of scents, shapes and sizes and are generally considered safer, more cost-effective and longer lasting than traditional candles.

When you place 1 or 2 pieces of scented wax on a wax melt burner, the heat will cause the wax to melt into a liquid state, releasing the aroma of the fragrance oil inside, making your space smell amazing. 

Wax melts can be used in either traditional tealight wax melt burner or an electric wax melt burner.

How are wax melts different to candles?

Wax melts are individual squares of wax that are melted in a wax melt burner - without coming into direct contact with the flame.

Because the wax melt does not come into contact with a naked flame, the scent throw can last longer as the fragrance oil is burnt off much slower. 

Which type of wax do you use?

We use an all natural soy wax which is produced less than 25 miles away from our Cheshire HQ. It is 100% vegan, sustainable and biodegradable.

Soy wax is a natural vegetable wax made from the oil of soybeans. After harvesting, the beans are cleaned, cracked, de-hulled and rolled into flakes. The oil is then extracted from the flakes and hydrogenated. The hydrogenation process converts some of the fatty acids in the oil from unsaturated to saturated - perfect for making wax.

Why did you choose soy wax over paraffin wax?
1. It burns for longer. Soy wax has a much lower melting point than paraffin wax and so it's capable of buring for up to 50% longer.

2. Soy wax is non-toxic. Soy wax is made from vegetable oil and so unlike paraffin wax, it's clean burning and releases no known carcinogens when burnt.

3. It has a better scent release. Due to the lower melting temperature of soy wax, the temperature of the 'wax pool' is much lower when you melt one or two squares of a wax melt. At a lower temperature, the fragrance oils vaporise better, thus releasing more fragrance into the air.

4. It is a renewable resource. Soy beans are an environmentally friendly, sustainable and renewable resource which makes them much better for our planet. We even source ours locally to reduce the environmental impact even further.

5. It's easier to clean. Soy wax is much easier to clean if spilt as it's biodegradable. A cloth and some hot water should clean it up no problem.

6. It's clean burning. You won't see any black soot coming from our products when you use them and they don't create any carcinogens.

What other ingredients are in your wax melts?

We use 100% plant-based glitter made from eucalyptus cellulose or an eco-friendly onion powder - both of which are sustainably grown and non-genetically modified.

Fragrance oils by their definition are chemical, synthetic compounds that have been specially formulated by one of the UK's biggest fragrance houses - specifically for use in home fragrance products.

All of our products are vegan-friendly, cruelty-free and we will never use ingredients that have been tested on animals.

Are wax melts safe for humans?

Wax melts are perfectly safe for use by humans if used correctly.  

Do not leave tealight burners unattended.

Although they may look good enough to eat, our wax melt snap bars are not for human consumption - so please keep out of reach of children or pets.

We are fully CLP compliant and if necessary, products will include details of any allergens.

Are wax melts safe for pets?

Wax melts are generally fine to be used in households with pets and many pet owners use these products without issue, ourselves included.

As with all home fragrance products, precautions should be taken when using in households with pets and we recommend taking the appropriate steps to minimise the risk of them ingesting, inhaling or absorbing our products.

Birds, aquatics or exotics have very sensitive respiratory systems and so we recommend using our products in another room and with caution if you keep these types of pets.

Are Planet Wax Co products highly scented?

Our fragrance oils have been expertly blended by one of the biggest UK fragrance houses to guarantee maximum scent throw and the most amazing scents.

What makes Planet Wax Co wax melts the best in the UK?

Unlike other large home fragrance brands, our products are toxin and paraben-free.

They are also vegan-friendly and cruelty-free. We only only ever use ingredients that have not been tested on animals.

Our packaging is plastic-free, recyclable and biodegradable.

Are your products biodegradable?

Absolutely!

We use eco-friendly soy wax, vegan-friendly and cruelty-free fragrance oils and plant-based glitter.

All of our our ingredients are completely recyclable and 100% biodegradable. 

Is your packaging recyclable?

Absolutely! Your wax melt snap bar(s) will be packaged in a glassine bag made from sustainably sourced paper.

They're grease resistant, PH neutral and acid free so will keep your wax melts perfectly safe until use.

They're also biodegradable and 100% recyclable.

Payment

Which payment methods do you accept?

We accept payment using all major debit and credit cards including Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, American Express, Discover and Diners Club.

You can also pay using PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay or ShopPay.

We offer Buy Now Pay Later with Clearpay. Subject to Approval.

Do you store my debit/credit card information? - For security purposes, we don’t store your debit/credit card number in our system.

If you opt to save your card details at the checkout, the information is encrypted and stored through a PCI DSS compliant tokenisation system that replaces your credit card number with a different identifier, called a “token.”

This adds several layers of security and convenience and means that your card details will be available next time you choose to shop with us.

Do you offer a Buy Now, Pay Later option?

We offer Buy Now Pay Later with Clearpay. Subject to Approval. 

Why can't I see a Buy Now, Pay Later option at the checkout? - Please be advised that Buy Now, Pay Later options are not available when using 'Express Checkout' options such as Shop Pay or GPay. How can I place an order?

You can find your favourite Planet Wax Co products right here on our website.

Simply click 'Shop' on the main menu to view our store.

You can also click the magnifying glass on the top left hand side of any page on our website to access the search function if you already know what you're looking for. Please select the quanity that you require and click 'Add to cart'.

Once you've added everything that you wish to order, simply click the shopping bag icon on the top right hand-side to display your cart.

Lastly, click the 'Check out' button once you're ready to complete your order and follow the steps to make payment and complete your purchase.

How can I amend / cancel an order?

If you require your order to be amended, please contact us as soon as possible and if we can amend your order, we'd be happy to do so.

We like to maintain a speedy turnaround so if you require your order to be cancelled, please contact us as soon as possible.

Once an order has been shipped, we are not able to cancel it so you'd need to return your order for a refund if you no longer require it.

How can I place a wholesale / bulk order?

We currently only ship within the UK.

We'd absolutely love to go global though - so please let us know where you'd love us to deliver to and we'll see what we can do!

We aim to ship orders within 1-2 working days.

Orders are shipped via Royal Mail between Monday - Friday.

Where is my order confirmation email?

You'll automatically be sent an order confirmation email as soon as you place your order.

Please also check your junk/spam/promotions folder in case your order confirmation email was filtered in error.

If you're still unable to locate your order confirmation email, please contact us and we'd be happy to resend this to you.

How can I check the status of my order?

As per Royal Mail's website, deliveries can take up to 10 working days during busy periods.

My order has damaged / defective items.

We're sorry if your order has damaged/defective items.

In the rare event that you receive damaged/defective items, please email hello@planetofwax.co.uk and let us know what is damaged/defective so that we can look into it and make things right.

My order is missing items.

We're sorry if we've missed something off your order.  😭

Returns & Exchanges

What is your return & policy?

RETURNS - Returns are accepted within 30 days of delivery. Products must be unused and in their original packaging.

It is the responsiblity of the buyer to cover return shipping costs. We recommend sending all returns via a tracked service. 

Damaged or defective items can also be returned. Please email hello@planetofwax.co.uk if your order contains any damaged or defective items.

Refunds for approved returns will be issued within 5-10 working days of receipt of your return.

EXCHANGES - We do not process exchanges due to stock availability.

Instead, please return the product(s) that you no longer require and place a new order for the product(s) that you require instead.

Using Wax Melts

How do I use a wax melt?

-Choose a Safe Location. Place your wax melt burner on a stable and heat-resistant surface. Ensure it's on a level surface, away from flammable materials and out of reach of children and pets.

- Prepare your Wax Melt(s) - Planet Wax Co wax melts are snap bars, each with 10 individual chunks that can quite literally be 'snapped' off and popped into your wax melt burner. We recommend melting 1 or 2 pieces at a time depending on the size of your space and your desired strength of the fragrance.

- Place the wax melt in the dish - Lift the lid off the top dish or pop the bowl onto the top of your wax melt burner and carefully place the wax melt(s) in it.

- Ignite the tealight candle if your burner uses a tea-light candle as a heat source and place it in the lower compartment of the burner. Make sure it's centered and secure.

Our best soy wax melts do also work with an electric burner but we recommend using a tealight burner for best results.

- Warm the Wax. As the tealight candle burns or the electric warmer heats up, the wax in the dish will begin to melt. This gradual heating process allows the amazing fragrance to disperse gently into the air and surround your space.

Why are my wax melts going white on top?

Frosting is a very common occurence when using soy wax.

Soy wax is a natural product and so it can try to revert back to its natural form - showing up on your wax melts or candles as surface crystallisation.

We've tried to keep frosting to a minimum when creating our wax melts and candles by heating our moulds/jars before pouring to reduce the chance of the wax cooling too quickly.

We also keep our studio unit a toasty 22 degrees Celsius during production to help minimise this as much as possible.

Please rest assured that frosting really is nothing to worry about and it won't affect the performance or fragrance throw of your wax melts or candles in any way, shape or form. 🤩

Why is there white smoke coming from my wax melts?

The white "smoke" you may see coming from your wax melt isn't actually smoke - this is in fact just fragrance oil vapour evaporating when being burnt off.

You will see it more with some fragrances than others but please don't be concerned, it's nothing to worry about. 

If you ever see black smoke when melting, please extinguish your tealight candle immediately as this is a sign that the wax is burning too hot or there may be a hairline crack in the dish of your wax melt burner. 

Please allow your wax melt burner to cool down completely before checking this further and please replace your wax melt burner if damaged.

Why is my wax melt bubbling?

Your wax melt might be bubbling because there could be water in the wax (if your wax melt burner has recently been washed) or the wax could be too hot due if your tealight is too close to the wax melt dish.

Always ensure your wax melt burner is completely dry before using a new wax melt if you've recently cleaned it with water. 

If using a tealight burner, please also ensure there is a sufficient gap between the tealight and the wax melt dish.

We recommend using a 4 hour tealight with Planet Wax Co wax melts.
